About Our School
A brief history
ISMS, was founded in 1981 under our original name (Inner City Montessori Association, ICMA) as a dynamic community of children, Montessori-trained teachers, parents, carers and support staff. The original school thrived and grew to 236 children and 43 staff at the start of 2009.
Strategic plan
In 2008 the school adopted a powerful new strategic plan and in 2009 we decided that our name should be changed to more precisely reflect the school’s area of service.
As the Inner Sydney Montessori School, ISMS, we continue to provide inclusive co-educational, non-denominational, authentic Montessori education for children from birth to 12 years old. Our children are diverse in ethnicity, socio-economic background and abilities.
2 campuses
There are currently two inner Sydney campuses, one at Lilyfield serving children aged 3 to 6 in Pre-Primary, Stage 1, and the larger campus at Balmain, serving children
- From birth to 18 months in Nido, the Nest
- From 18 to 36 months in PTP, the Parent Toddler Program
- From 3 to 12 years in three stages from pre-primary to the end of primary school.
ISMS continues to offer a unique educational experience:
- Our school meets or exceeds government requirements for all age groups
- Our teachers are passionate and dedicated, being fully trained in both traditional and Montessori curriculum and method
- Our parents are involved in the life of the school
- And, most importantly, our children learn not because they have to, but because they want to.
Our motto is “Help me to do it myself”.
